What is this?!

November 15, 2006

I was talking with a guest in my flat this afternoon and this THING was flying around my flowers, seemingly drinking from them.  As those of you who know me can imagine, I wasn’t that calm!  Anyway, I was brave enough to take a photo.  Does anyone know what it is?  (Click on picture for bigger view.)  It was about an inch and a half long with a long curly tongue that it dipped into the flowers.  Ewwww!!

  4. I think you’ll find it is a hummingbird hawk moth (see http://www.rspb.org.uk/gardens/guide/atoz/h/hummingbirdhawkmoth.asp). We had one in the garden last summer - they really do look and behave just like a tiny hummingbird.

  5. it’s a moth that looks like a hummingbird - they do exist! Ask Marc about this - we have discussed this at length. (I too was amazed the first time I saw one in Tours).
